Day Two

Day two started out similar to day one.  The only difference is that today is a smidge colder.  Does that stop the desperate need for gold, coins or oher antique relics that are certain to provide me with fortune and glory?  Hell no!  I WILL NOT GIVE UP MY HUNT FOR TREASURE!

Today's hunt started alittle different than yesterday.  Today we went hunting survey posts.  They say that as long as a man owns land, then he owns the world.  I don't know who "they" are, I don't know who's quote this is but we own 40 acres.  Would you call this the world?  Probably not but it's our piece of the world and I'm going to scour every square inch!  Or meter if you are trying to be metric minded.

In 1880 a french family with the last name Hounjet founded our land and built their empire.  So, that means that there is quite possibly artifacts dated from the 1800's on our land.  Five years ago we bought this little piece of heaven.  How lucky were we to buy a piece of land right in the middle of a migration pattern in the St. Denis hills! We have a scenic yard.  We have a bog, slough, trees and since we are in a migration pattern we also have a multitude of birds that crap all over our stuff in the Spring and Fall.

Living on an old homestead also means there is 131 years of passed on information about where our property lines are.  We were told "the property line is near that stack of hay bales out there".  All of a sudden two years ago the hay bales disappeared and the farmer is now farming 20 feet more than he did in years past.  So it's safe to say nobody knows where the hell our property lines are.

Kelly and I got in the quad and decided to take the Ace 250 and see if we can find a rust hole that was once a 4' survey marker.

We arrived at our destination.  The bales are gone but we "have an idea" where they were.  As soon as I turned on the ol' Metal detector:  Beep!  Beep!  Beep!  What the...?  Nope, that's the quad.  On with the hunt!  10 seconds later: Beep!  Beep!  Beep!  Cool!  4" depth.  Grab the shovel and start digging.  What are the odds we'd find the survey pin this quick?

Around 1,000,000 to 1.  Bah!  I'm not sure what this is but it looks like an old hubcap cover of some kind.  It has Ford written on it but I'm pretty sure it's not a silver cup from a past U.S. President.

After an hour, we give up.  All we found was a badger hole, this hubcap cover and muddy shoes.  I'm going grocery shopping.  BUT I WILL BE OUT AGAIN TOMORROW!
