Today we will explore the 12 tools required for a successful treasure hunt!
Besides a strong spirit, a general curiosity for what the heck is under the ground and patience there are some tools that you will need:
1. A Beautiful Sunny Day
A general requirement to a successful treasure hunting day is a beautiful stress free day with the sun shining and the birds singing!
2. Garden Gloves
Beautifully manicured hands are in serious jeopardy if garden gloves of some kind are not worn! You don't want a chipped or peeling fingernail in the middle of an exciting find. This can ruin your treasure hunt! Do not let this happen!
3. A Big Ugly Garden Hat
Any colour, any size. As long as it's big, ugly or unique. It will shield your precious pasty face from the sun but will also look glamourous while searching for treasure! ~~Perfect Darling!~~
4. The Metal Detector
This is a picture of my Ace 250. I went with this detector because after much online research, this one seemed the best for the farm treasures I would be seeking. It works ok to locate things but to REALLY find things quickly it must be used with:
5. The Pin Pointer
This bad boy works in conjunction with the metal detector. I love this thing! I spent 20 minutes digging around for a lousy rusty nail with the metal detector until I got the Pin Pointer. This lets you "swoop" around in the dirt and when you touch the metal piece in the dirt this thing starts vibrating like crazy! Hmmmm.....leaving that one alone......on with the tools!
6. The Cart and Quad
We have a little quad and cart that we use to bring all our treasures to the shop. Don't panic if you don't have a quad or cart! I just don't want to carry things around by hand. It's possible to get a small wagon. If you have kids I'm sure you have a little red wagon that's not near as interesting as their XBox or PS3 that you could use and they wouldn't even notice. I would suggest repainting the wagon and turning it into the "Treasure Wagon" or "Red Pirate Treasure Cart" AARRRRRRRR...
7. The Dump Bucket
You will need a bucket to dump all the crap you find that you don't want to "re-find" in the future. The contents of the dump bucket may include the elusive rusty nails, unrecognizable pieces of rusty metal, bottle caps etc. Pretty much anything you don't want to keep. BUT if you don't pick it up and put it The Dumping Place", you run the risk of re finding this junk!
8. The Dumping Place
I dump all our junky things that I don't want to keep at the "approved location" beside the shop..........does anyone know who these people are?! HA!
9. Garden Tools and Shovels
This is a personal call. Depending on your type of dirt, the kind of soil, the density of the soil, sand, water....whatever the case may be. You may also want to procure an assistant for this part of your treasure hunting. Shovelling is hard work and it's not near as interesting as metal detecting and pin pointing! If you are having trouble convincing someone to be your "assistant", this may be the time for you to also read Tom Sawyer. There's an interesting psychological plot regarding a white picket fence......
10. Cleaning Tools
Let's face it! Treasure Hunting is dirty work and you will need tools to clean your dirty items! Simple household tools is all you will need here. Don't spend a pack of money on things you don't need! Clean the items and put them away in a "Booty Box".
11. The Booty Box
This is my Booty Box. This is where I put all my small items that I want to hang onto. It's important that you choose a Booty Box that isn't too small. You don't want your treasure to overflow! And now for the most important item you will need while treasure hunting..................
12. Pink Happiness
No successful treasure hunt would be complete without a little bit of liquid therapy. (Remind me to see if I can be reimbursed for wine with my benefits at work. - seems to me if there is a health benefit, it should be covered.) Anyway, grab a classy aluminum to-go mug, get your treasure hunting tools together and get out there! You never know what you will find!
Next installment will be after June 4th! The first annual T.H.A.W.W.W. (Treasure Hunting and Water With Wine) day. We are going to do some Geo-Caching, some Treasure Hunting, Some Hot Tubbing and some Pink Happiness! Should be a great day!
TTFN Friends!
